About the Eagles

Aerie 4278 is one of more than 1,500 Eagles clubs across the United States and Canada, all working toward the same goal: People Helping People.

OUR MISSION
Liberty, truth, justice, and equality
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international nonprofit. Members come together in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice, and equality to make life better for others: easing hardship and spreading peace, prosperity, and hope.
RIGHT HERE IN CAPE FAIR
Keeping our neighbors safe
The Cape Fair Eagles donated, and still maintain, the early warning sirens near Cape Fair and Y76, so our neighbors get the word fast when danger is on the way.
MORE THAN $10 MILLION A YEAR
Every dollar raised goes back out
Each year the Eagles give more than $10 million to local communities and charities, and every dollar raised for these causes goes back out as grants. The Eagles raise money for eight major charities: funds for kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and spinal cord injuries, plus a children’s fund, the Memorial Foundation, and the Golden Eagle Fund.
OUR HISTORY
Born in a Seattle shipyard in 1898
In February 1898, six theater owners met in a Seattle shipyard to talk over a musicians’ strike. Once it was settled, they decided to “bury the hatchet” and stay together as “The Order of Good Things.” As the group grew, members chose the bald eagle as their emblem and took the name Fraternal Order of Eagles. The Auxiliary dates back to 1927. Today there are nearly 800,000 Eagles in more than 1,500 clubs across the United States and Canada.
PROUD ACCOMPLISHMENTS
What the Eagles have helped do
Founding Mother’s Day. Building the $25 million Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa. Serving as a driving force behind Social Security. Helping end age discrimination in hiring through the Jobs After 40 program. Placing Ten Commandments monuments across the United States.
FAMOUS EAGLES
Presidents, champions, and stars
Eagles have included six U.S. presidents (Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan) and first ladies Eleanor Roosevelt and Bess Truman. So were comedian Bob Hope, heavyweight champion Max Baer, hockey great Gordie Howe, Alaska Governor William Allen Egan, and broadcaster Virginia Graham; musicians Billy Ray Cyrus, Tony Orlando, Lee Greenwood, Louise Mandrell, and Neal McCoy; and racers Tony Stewart, Sam Hornish Jr., Justin Haley, and James Buescher.
